About me - Art Statement
I'm Summit Amiss - the artist committing random acts of art.
Using pencils, pen, ink, markers, acrylics, oils, watercolours, spray paint (I could go on...) I create pieces through gut instinct. I enjoy mixing media, layering one on top of another to create effects that best express an idea. Experimenting is key to my process, and the end results are never quite the same twice. Just how I like it!
There are certain subjects that appear in many of my pieces - puns and wordplay, observations that stuck with me, internal trauma, nostalgia, patterns, geometry and straight lines, hand-drawn elements, bold linework, an animated style, abstract backgrounds and strong colours. Potatoes.
My interests and hobbies also always manage to creep into my work in some form or another. Animals, horror, anime, my huskies, architecture, Japan, tattoos... just to name a few. My art is a form of therapy, a platform for me to express my experiences, my thoughts and feelings about the wider world and my sense of self.
I particularly like making pieces that have some form of contrast - toning with sketched elements, shading with blacks and colours, graphite with ink, and drawing with painting. When creating large pieces, I usually add other media to painted pieces on canvas or board. For most smaller pieces, I prefer to draw pieces on paper.
I also hand paint custom designs onto jackets and shoes, either based on my interests and by commission. More recently, I've branched into resin crafting things like dominos or jewelry. Basically my attitude to art is the same as my attitude to life - follow my nose and see what happens.
